Morrison Outdoors logo Designer Seattle Alex Van Gilder Brand Identity Logo

Morrison Outdoors is an outdoor brand focused on creating products that allow families to safely take their youngest family members on memorable camping trips. I created a brand that focuses on the fun and creative energy kids of all ages bring to a couple days spent in the wilderness!

Cuppa Gogo coffee logo Designer Seattle Alex Van Gilder Brand Identity Logo

Cuppa Gogo is a coffee truck and they came to me to get their entire brand established. The client gave me a ton of creative control to really make the brand stand out among other coffee trucks in the area. This project was/is a lot of fun and I am excited to do more work on it as the company continues to expand. Learn more in the case study!

I redesigned the client side of SAP Concur’s resource center to be easier for users to consume content, look consistent across different resource types, and be designed on a modular grid system. The modular grid supports the resource center being dynamic as the user requests different amounts of content. Visit the case study to learn all about my process!

There’s a much deeper into my thought process over here.

90 Second Reviews logo Alex Van Gilder Designer Seattle Visual Branding designing

90 Second Review is a Youtube channel that reviews video games and movies in 90 seconds or less. The client came to me needing a full brand for this new venture of theirs. In a space that is so heavily saturated with clicky-bait thumbnails, I am proud of the brand I was able to establish for 90 Second Reviews. I also like the simple, short and sweet opening intro for their videos too. Learn more about all of it in the case study!

Form re-design redesign SAP Concur interaction design UX User Experience Interface Alex Van Gilder

With forms being present on nearly every page, it’s important that the forms are inviting enough to make users want to fill them out. I redesigned the forms to occupy less visual space, be more responsive to user interaction, and simplified form fields that eliminated confusing user experiences. Valve Software Lunar New Year Sale 2016 Illustration Design UX UI interface design Alex Van Gilder

Every year, Steam has a couple of big sales that users really look forward to. In 2016, with rising popularity of the Steam platform in Asian countries, we decided to have a Lunar New Year sale. With this being the first sale of it’s kind, we were really free to try new things. We decided to tell the story of a Monkey (2016 was year of the monkey) who was going home to visit his family. To tie in the sale aspect, we decided on a choose your own adventure where each choice would reflect the kind of game users were shown (Driving, Strategy, FPS, etc). The sale was successful and it was amazing to see our ideas come to life. Worked long hours with the homie, Koji Minami on this one.

Here’s a deeper look into the assets we made for this project.

Valve Software Steam Store Visual Designer User Experience User Interface Alex Van Gilder

As a designer at Valve Software on the Steam team, my bread and butter was designing and implementing assets for all promotional events, launch events, along with the yearly sales. The theme and supporting assets for the yearly sales are always a blast to work on. Valve Software is known for having a flat structure (no managers, everyone is responsible for themselves and their own work) and it was great learning experience to self-criticize my work to the best it could be. With the Steam active user base eclipsing 125 million, it’s safe to say that the day to day work I did was seen my millions of people daily.

Here’s a selection of the things I made over the years.

Valve Software The International DOTA2 DOTA 2 tournament Video Games Championship 2016 TI5 Logo design Space design environmental design Seattle Alex Van Gilder

The International is the biggest e-sports tournament in the world. Sixteen DOTA2 teams battle battle each other for an over $18 million (in 2015) and over $20million (in 2016) prize pool. I was able to be part of the 2015 and 2016 years. I played more of a hired gun role for these events. Going where ever I could be the greatest value to the team. I did printed materials such as hanging team banners, event signage, character art, decorative column wraps, attendee’s badges, motion work (players cards, team cards, player intros) etc.

Here’s some images of the event, littered with assets I made.

Buena Onda Art Show painted objects T shirts Baseball Water bottle Professionally painted Sticker design Alex Van Gilder

It’s no secret that I really enjoy making things. I once rented a studio space because of the growing list of projects I wanted to do. These projects ranged from custom painted baseball bats (with matching metal bottles) to X-PAC pouches, to motivational key chains, to shirts to a barrel of monkeys (painted a keg red and drew a bunch of little monkeys on it). It was a great experience and that allowed me to check “Have an art show” off the bucket list!

Woodcarving Wood Carving Seattle Kitchen Items Alex Van Gilder

I’m a big fan from injecting silly into life as much as possible, and this is a prime example of that! I took old, discarded pieces of wood and injected life into them again. Each utensil has it’s own personality and is ready to add some fun to any kitchen!

Flippswitch Flipp Switch Clothing Company Brand Logo design branding Skate Alex Van Gilder

Flippswitch is a clothing company I started in high school. I did everything! From designing, to silk screening, to marketing and everything in between. Many, shirts were sold, many friends were made, and great times were had. It’s my earliest logo, designed when I was 15 years old. And I still like it!
